If the player so chooses, they can have Recker go through a few side rooms (one of which has a collectible dog tag). Recker is able to pass the soldiers without being seen as he goes up a staircase to the next floor. However, the pursuers, who are Russian Army soldiers, check through the small windows to look for him.
